Further upriver though, in the [[Red River basin]] farmland areas supplying Ikaanos city with much of its food, longer spells of fixed weather are experienced, leading to floods and drought which can impact the economy of the republic and contribute to poverty and violence amongst the human population.
Further upriver though, in the [[Red River basin]] farmland areas supplying Ikaanos city with much of its food, the weather isn't as changeable day to day. This means that there are sometimes long periods of solid, heavy, rain, leading to floods - and also sometimes spells of unbroken cloudless, hot, sunshine long enough to cause droughts. These conditions contribute to irregular but frequent [[famines]], which impact the economy of the republic and increase poverty and violence amongst the human population when they occur.

Raana is a jungle planet - hot, wet, humid, and full of life. As on Earth, its equatorial regions do not exhibit much in the way of spring/summer/autumn/winter seasons. And its geography leads to there being less in the way of predictable, extended, wet/dry seasons too.

The Republic of Ikaanos and other human colonies on Raana are near the equator. And the area where the action in Masters of Raana takes place - Ikaanos city, and some ways up the Red River - is low altitude, and coastal and estuarine, hence hot and humid. The weather varies greatly from day to day - from baking hot and cloudless, to torrential downpours from dark clouds blotting out the sun, with everything in between. But never any long stretches of one thing or another, and never cold. The city's climate could be summarised as and hot, humid, and rainy, with steaming days in between spectacular thunderstorms.

Further upriver though, in the Red River basin farmland areas supplying Ikaanos city with much of its food, the weather isn't as changeable day to day. This means that there are sometimes long periods of solid, heavy, rain, leading to floods - and also sometimes spells of unbroken cloudless, hot, sunshine long enough to cause droughts. These conditions contribute to irregular but frequent famines, which impact the economy of the republic and increase poverty and violence amongst the human population when they occur.
