The European Union, The NUSA and several other states in Oceania formed the United Earth Confederation in 2197.
The Scandinavian state joined with UEC in 2205.
When the African Union joined in 2225, the UEC wielded an economic and military force that no other mega-state could match. Their main contender for world domination, the Pan-Asian Confederation, finally merged with the Union in 2267.

As the UE government never faced any advanced alien threats (before 2290), the need for offensive space capabilities was almost non-existent, and geared mostly toward shooting down terrestrial objects such as renegade asteroids.
The Aries class battleship, a capital warship that combined the roles of a space fighter carrier and battleship, was one exception, however. Only two of these were ever built.
