Background

Mai-Lynn's father, who was a well-known florist residing in the district of Raikan, gave the girl a peaceful upbringing in a secluded house surrounded by Japanese gardens. She learned at an early to tend to a home, manage a garden and act as a good hostess - a title Mai-Lynn had to take on after mother went out on an Arkukima - a post-severance phenomenon of pilgrimage, common among the Japanese people of Ikaanos.

The absence of her mother, and her father's mounting problems with a Raikan street gang, eventually impoverished the father-daughter duo, forcing Mai-Lynn into servitude.
