Warrior's Monument

Overview

Erected over a century ago in a quiet clearing, this place is a resting place for the most renowned leaders of the Aesir tribe.

There is a great funeral pyre marks in the center, surrounded by the graves of those who were burned upon it.

To the left of two stone pillars, a man-sized stone statue of Odin rises from the clearing.

Inscription

Etched into the stone plinth beneath the statue of Odin are the following verses:

In battle's fury, we met our end
Slain by foes who no mercy would lend
Now in death's embrace, we linger near
In the realm of Valhall our spirits appear
Our honored souls forever bound
To Odin's hall, where no sorrow's found

Special

1. My father brought me here when I was barely six years old. He told me the gods listen more closely in places like this. I remember squeezing his hand so tight my knuckles hurt.
2. We kids used to dare each other to touch the monument at night. I remember that time… Before my parents were killed… such bliss. Compared to how things turned out.
3. Let me show you something… I carved my name into the back of this stone the night I left Odensborg. Just a small mark. I wanted the gods to remember me.
4. My mother didn't like this place for some reason, despite her zealous faith. She preferred the new temple in Watery Eyes.
5. There's a story about this place. I don't know if you've heard it. Back in the dark ages, raiders once tried to topple Odin. Lightning struck their camp that same night. Coincidence? I don't think so.
6. Every warrior from Myrdalen has stood here before their first real battle.
7. As a girl, I thought the carvings moved when no one looked directly at them. Like the figures were fighting an endless war inside the stone.
8. My father took me here for a funeral when I was five years old. It was such a big impression. I can still smell the funeral pyre when I close my eyes.
9. They say these pillars predate Myrdalen itself. That they stood alone before my people came. I like that. It means the gods were here first.
10. There’s a crack running through the base of Odin. Here, look. The priests claim it appeared the day Eckhard Borenson broke his oath. He was the jarl who abandoned Myrdalen when raiders attacked us over a century ago. They still tell stories about him at The Alebarrel. (Laughs) And none of them paint him as a good ruler.
11. I feel so alive at this place. Our ancestors are watching and judging us. If your heart bears honor, they grant you their powers.
12. If I ever get killed in battle, promise me you'll arrange a proper funeral. If I am worthy of it.
13. Mmh… I love this place. On really cold nights, the frost gathers in the runes and makes them gleam like silver. It almost looks as if the words are freshly carved again. Those nights are unfortunately very rare. We call them "isnätter".
14. Stand still for a moment. (Long pause) Feel that? The air is heavier here. I have no doubt this place bears true magic.
