Notes about training '''Medicine''':
* '''Medicine''' is generally only raised by reviving someone in your party - which incurs attribute losses, unless you use a '''[[Doctor's Kit]]''', which requires '''Skill 40'''. Skill improvements via this route cap out at 90. So there's a choice between reading a couple of the medical books early on, to reach skill 40 as soon as possible to stop attribute losses, and leaving the other two books until later... or leaving all the books until after the skill cap is reached, so you can eventually improve your skill to the maximum possible.

Books are available in a variety of areas that can improve your Skills and Attributes once read. Once obtained, they can be accessed via Training > Advanced Training. A book's contents can be digested in a few days of dedicated effort (maybe eight, three-hour sessions - but possibly influenced by Intelligence; see below). Note: drink coffee to stay focused!

In addition to other benefits, each book you read will subsequently gain you +1 Influence per day. Ikaanans are impressed by your education!

Intelligence 70+ increases the rate at which you read most books, by +25% to +150% depending on the book (commonly +100%).

Drinking coffee while you read also increases the rate at which you complete books, by +20% to +150% depending on the book (commonly +30%).

The "Brainy" trait usually increases the primary skill or attribute gains you will achieve from completing most books (by +1, +2 or +3).

Also, having relevant books in the library increases the chance of the MC successfully Homeschooling NPCs.

Note: stores that sell books show info along the lines of: "Output: X–Y skill points". Most of these are incorrect, so you should disregard this info, until fixed.

Occult

  • The Kessian Manuscripts - Introduction: raises Occult by 12(+3) but reduces Willpower by -3; allows progression to further passages; obtained in the Prowler In The Depths Chapter 3.
  • The Kessian Manuscripts - The Rite of Passage: raises Occult by 10 and unlocks Incantations, but you will lose 9-15 Willpower whilst reading it (-1 point per session; 15 sessions to read and comprehend the Rite; but Intelligence 70+, and drinking coffee, each increase your progress per session - so that with them you might require as few as 9 sessions).
  • The Kessian Manuscripts - Mind Melt: raises Occult by 4, reduces Willpower by -1, and unlocks use of the Mind Melt incantation.
  • The Kessian Manuscripts - Cydikar's Touch: raises Occult by 2, reduces Willpower by -1, and unlocks use of the Cydikar's Touch incantation.
  • The Kessian Manuscripts - The Voice of Adem: raises Occult by 10 and grants use of the Voice of Adem Incantation, but you will lose 13-20 Willpower whilst reading it (-1 point per session; 20 sessions to read and comprehend the passage; but drinking coffee each session speeds your progress by increasing your focus so that you might require as few as 13 sessions).
  • Disturbing notebook found after Sentinel Hill battle: raises Occult by 5 and grants use of the Affinity Incantation, but you will lose 9-13 Willpower whilst reading it (-1 point per session; 13 sessions to read and comprehend it; but drinking coffee each session speeds progress by increasing focus so that you might require as few as 9 sessions).
