Assignments and Jobs - Guard
Guard
- Daily Income: Special
- Hours: Special
- Age: Any
- Risks: High
Your Guards' main task is to keep your household safe from external threats, and to prevent unruly slaves escaping. A well-guarded Household can also contribute to the safety of your community (increases Ikaanos' Control value).
If you have a Captain of the Guard assigned, each Guard will also have a daily chance of having their Discipline and their Ranged and Melee combat skills increased (caps: 80), with the chance of this happening dependent on the Skill of the Captain.

Guard Pool
Each guard adds his or her Guard Value to the household Guard Pool.
That pool determines the total defensive power of the Household.
A Captain also adds his or her Guard Value to the Guard Pool.
An adult, friendly Wrool Cat living in the compound (i.e. if the MC did not exterminate it during Conclude Day domestic events) adds +5 points to the Guard Pool.
Upgraded compound walls also add to the Guard Pool:
- Reinforced parapet: +5
- Gothic wall spikes: +10
- Covered parapet: +10
Effects of the Guard Pool:
The guard pool value does many things to protect your household, including:
- Reduces the chances of slaves succeeding when trying to escape from your household.
- Helps prevent thieves from burgling you, catch urchins stealing from you, and capture other trespassers such as Kelly McTierney.
- Reduces Chaos in your Tavern:
- Guard Pool more than 20 reduces Chaos by 1 point.
- Guard Pool more than 40 reduces Chaos by 2 additional points.
- Guard Pool more than 60 reduces Chaos by 3 additional points.
- Defends your Household against raids by bandits (see below).
Ikaanos Control
The Guards also help keep the surrounding area safe from Bandits and other threats, if there are enough of them to exert control beyond your own Household. This will only make a difference if Ikaanos is somewhat disorderly though, when the Skyguard is stretched thin.
- If your Guard Pool is 100 or higher, your Guard Pool value divided by 10 = daily % chance for +1 Control, up to Control 50.
Household Raids
When city control falls below 40, groups of raiders may assault your household. The chance of a household raid scales based on the household's wealth and power values. Wealthier, less powerful houses are more likely to be targeted by raiders.
Households with higher Guard Pool have higher chances of successfully repelling the raiders; a guard pool is 120 is sufficient to repel 99% of raids. The MC also contributes his prowess to the Guard Pool during raids (guard pool value addition using strength and combat skills).
All raids have the following effects:
- Random health losses for guards and/or the MC. Note: on Grimdark mode, this may be lethal!
- Assigned guards may improve Ranged and Melee combat skills.
- Variable ammo costs will be incurred (money will be automatically deducted to replace spent ammo rather than reducing your ammo stocks).
- Bandits may be killed, reducing the Bandit strength in Ikaanos.
- Dead bandits may leave loot behind, in the form of weapons and Merchandise - in potentially substantial quantities!
- Household Disrepair: 5-15
If the raiders successfully breach your defenses, they will loot you, causing the following effects:
- Up to 90% of your cash will be stolen (capped at $28,000).
- Approximately 10% of your Gold bars will be lost.
- Approximately 10% of your Silver will be looted.
- 25%-50% of your Merchandise will be stolen IF sufficient raiders survive to carry it away (raider strength 30+).
- 25%-50% of your Food will may be stolen, IF Ikaanos' Prosperity is under 30, and IF sufficient raiders survive to carry it away (raider strength 30+).
- Your larger Gardens might be damaged (random chance; Grimdark difficulty only).
- Additional Household damage, bringing total Disrepair to 15-30.
- Loot taken from you will boost the strength of the Bandit faction in Ikaanos.
