The hunting mechanics of Masters of Raana entail a lot of different aspects that a survivalist must take into consideration:
Finding a good spot
A red antlers
icon (for large game) or pelt
icon (for small game) indicates that there is a hunting location. Each location is unique, with its own set of texts, events and skill prerequisites. It might take some experimentation before you find the spot and tactics best suited for your playstyle.
Available hunting locations
- The Wetlands - large game (deer and boar), more easily hunted out (cap: 7), but game more abundant when there (highest yields). And close to home!
- Imogen's Barrow - large game (deer and boar), less dense (lower yields) but over a larger area (higher cap = 9). A hike through the rough part of the city to get to it.
- Darkmere - abundant dukkas, but at a site only known to a few (characters who took the Huntmaster expert trait during character creation), and even further away.
- Avonmore Island - small Raanan forest game, best for pelts and low on meat, requiring a boat ride upriver to reach, and quest-locked.
- Corazon jungles - small Raanan forest game, best for pelts and low on meat, requiring a boat ride upriver to reach, and quest-locked.
- Blackfang valley - large game, requiring a boat ride upriver to reach, and only available once local charucks are removed.
Animal pool
Each spot has a unique pool that tells the area's abundance or scarcity when it comes to huntable game. A low value (2 or below) means a hunter suffers a severe penalty in all his tracking attempts (Survival skill). However, an area with an animal pool of 6-8 or higher (depending on location) means that the area is rich with beasts, providing a noticeable chance bonus.
The animal pool usually replenishes a point per day. Pools cap between 6-9.
Preparations
Before starting a hunting session (Cost: 2 hours, 6 Stamina points, 5 ammo), you must choose a weapon and hunting method:
Weapons
- Rifle: +5 Chance bonus.
- Shotgun: +12 Chance bonus when hunting small game. Less skins/pelt yield.
- Crossbow: -9 Chance bonus but higher skins/pelt yield.
Other equipment
- Backpack: available from Roo's General Store and maybe some other places; adds a +5 Chance bonus.
- Knife: carrying a knife with you will increase your Yield of Skins & Pelts by +1 (it need not be equipped).
Hunting methods
- Search prey: greater success chance during rainy days, lower success chance during sunny days, greater success chance right before dusk, lower success when hunting small game (pelts).
- Stand hunting: lower success chance during rainy days, greater success chance right after dawn, greater success when hunting small game.
- Decoy: greater success chance during warm and sunny days.
Followers
Bringing Followers out on hunting trips can provide a sizeable bonus based on their Survival skill and traits.
- The Wild-born trait: +8 Chance bonus.
- The Jaeger trait: +20 Chance bonus.
- Ranged skill 40+: +5 Chance bonus.
- Survival 40+: +5 Chance bonus.
- Survival 80+: +15 Chance bonus.
- Survival 14 or less: -10 Chance penalty.
Success Chance
Your Hunting success is a percentage chance equalling (a) your Survival skill, (b) minus 5, (c) with the following modifiers:
- The Main Character's attributes:
- Intelligence: +5 if 60+.
- Dexterity: -5 if 30 or less; +5 if 70+.
- Wounding: -5 if your current Health Points are 30 or less.
- Exhaustion: -10 if you are Tired.
- Morale: +5 if your day got off to a "Good Start" thanks to a blow job.
- Religion: if you are a member of the Cult of the Elder, you get a bonus according to your Devotion: +5 if 25-49, +15 if 50-99, and +30 if 100+.
- Traits: +15 if you are Wild-born.
- Disadvantages: -15 if you are Near-Sighted.
- Weapon being used: +5 if Rifle, +0 if Shotgun, -9 if Crossbow.
- If you own a Backpack: +5
- Followers:
- Weather:
- Storm: -13
- Windy with heavy rain: -8
- Rainy & cold: -8
- Dangerously hot: -5
- Hunting Method, depending on Weather and Time of Day:
- Search in bad weather: +10
- Search in the evening: +10
- Search in good weather: -5
- Stand in bad weather: -7
- Stand in the morning: +7
- Decoy in hot weather: +8
- Ikaanos' current Prosperity: -25 chance if Prosperity is 5 or less; -10 chance if its 5-14; 0 when its 15-89; +20 chance if Prosperity is 90+.
- +10 if your chosen hunting spot is nearly untouched; -10 if it is nearly depleted.
Yields
Hunting provides you with skins
, pelts
and raw meat
that you'll be able to either refine or sell directly to vendors.
The yield varies according to time, place and method, but is not affected by the success chance or roll. Yield is increased if the MC has the Wildborn trait, and if they are accompanied by a follower with the Jaeger trait. Yield of Skins & Pelts is increased if using Crossbows but decreased if using Shotguns.
Other benefits
Hunting attempts (if successful), have a 1 in 4 chance of increasing your assigned Followers' hunting (Survival) skills by +1 (cap: 100). Each session also gives a +1 to Happiness of Followers with the Wildborn trait. Each session also has a smaller chance to increase the MC's Survival skill (cap: 100), and Stealth skill (cap: 40).
